As a parent, what is my role in the recruiting process?
The parent’s role in the recruiting process is going to vary based on the family. However, it is important to keep in mind that this is the student-athletes recruiting process, it is not the parent’s. The parent should be there as a resource for additional questions and to consult in the decision making process, however when it comes to communicating with college coaches, that should solely come from the student-athlete. For the most part; It is expected that parents will take an active role in the on-campus visit, and there will be questions from the parent when they student-athlete meets with the coaching staff, however, it is important to let the student-athlete be the leader in the communication process. College coaches may request that parents take part in a phone call or in a zoom meeting, and that is an invitation for the parents to ask some questions. Ultimately, the student-athlete needs to lead the process and be the active driver, while the parents are along for the ride and helping guide the process from the back seat. Oftentimes, parents are paying the tuition bill, so having some role in the process is important.
